Because an allowance is made for 10mm wide mortar joints, the actual size is 390mm x 190mm x 190mm. Bricks are generally made to a traditional size – 230mm long, 110mm wide and 76mm high. The joints should have sufficient width so that they allow for the bricks to expand freely.
The key differences between blockwork and brickwork
Articulated joints – vertical gaps that allow for minor footing movement, to prevent distress and cracking. In non-technical usage, the terms cinder block and breeze block are often generalized to cover all of these varieties. Lightweight blocks can also be produced using autoclaved aerated concrete. A set of three masonry prisms that are at least 28 days old shall be saw cut from the masonry for each 5, 000 square feet (465 m2) of the wall area that is in question but not less than one set of three masonry prisms for the project.
Since bricks are made of clay they can undergo shape changes during manufacture, particularly in the firing process, and individual units can vary considerably in size.
Material and block density is same for solid blocks/bricks.
Concrete masonry unit – Masonry Block Wall Thickness
Intermediate prestressed masonry shear wall. Ordinary reinforced masonry shear wall. Special reinforced masonry shear wall. Solid glass-block units shall be provided when required. The units shall be of whole, sound materials and free from cracks and other defects that will interfere with proper laying or use. Mortars for ceramic wall and floor tile. Modified epoxy-emulsion mortar and grout. Metal reinforcement and accessories. Masonry directly above chases or recesses wider than 12 inches (305 mm) shall be supported on lintels. Acceptance relative to strength requirements. Thickness of bed joints does not exceed 5/8 inch (15.9 mm). Thickness of bed joints does not exceed 1/8 inch (3.2 mm). Where specified in the construction documents. Testing prisms from constructed masonry. Additional testing of specimens cut from locations in question shall be permitted. Where epoxy coated bars are used, lap length shall be increased by 50 percent.
