A wood fire left untended isn’t safe. If you have a firebox made of rough-textured material, such as fieldstone, you won’t be able to use a standard door because it can’t overlap the opening’s edge.

If you’re dealing with an older fireplace, you’ll want to be watchful when drilling into the brick, in case it’s brittle. You’ll also learn the best tools to use, how to measure and mark up, and the best way to knock the bricks out safely. Before cutting an opening in a brick wall, you need to install a steel lintel above where you want the hole. This print is ready for hanging or framing. Glass block panels are laterally restrained using panel anchors at 16 inches on center along the top and sides of the panel and an asphalt emulsion isolation joint at the sill.

The two diagonal measurements to check for square should be within 1/8 inch for typical window-sized openings. Glass will first remove all the glass. When the window opening is in place, the flange will be secured to the framed wall and will be recessed into the brick opening.

Some manufacturers of glass blocks have developed a method of bonding two glass blocks together with adhesive, producing blocks of up to 160 mm (6½”) thick with enhanced fire resistance.

This method of producing coloured blocks enables vibrant colours to be achieved which are not possible with coloured glass. If you are in doubt concerning where the masonry is in relation to the current frame, take several pictures of the window and take them to the fabricator for your glass panels.

Ensure the you sweep up or clear the area with a shop vac and wear gloves. Ask your glass fabricator for suggestions. It should ideally have a consistency close to bread dough, which will stop the panel from floating in the space as its sets. Stuff the insulation into all three channels. Make sure the door is flush to the face of the firebox. Using a socket wrench, tighten the screws to secure the unit to the brick. Be careful not to tighten the screws too much or you may loosen the anchor in the brick or break off the head of the screw.

Make sure to measure in a couple of places and note the smallest measurement for each so the door will slide into the space.

The panel will be heavy, so have assistance on hand to place the panel. The second piece extends to the head, with a flap that reaches about 2 inches above the window opening and is long enough to lap over the first piece installed.

The inside of the pan should have an upturned edge to prevent the water from draining to the interior, and the side flashings should lap over the ends of the pan.

In some cases, however, there is not enough of a space behind the brick to push the flashing tape back there. This squeeze out may be chipped away at the edges, but if it’s really heavy, even that won’t be enough to provide clearance for flexible tape.

By “outdoor environment” we mean several things: the outdoor moisture, the outdoor air, and the outdoor temperature. Anyone who’s been in the trade knows that all windows will leak eventually. The flashing at the head and the sides is meant to deflect water that leaks past the siding and around the window trim, shedding it to the outside.

In a coastal environment where water is likely to be driven by the wind, it’s especially important to use a self-healing butyl-based adhesive that will seal around the trim fasteners that will get driven through it.

A jigsaw works for trimming off a formed vinyl flange. Without a bottom flange, we don’t need caulk there. This actually simplifies the installation, since the nailing flanges may be hard to get to, especially at the top. I leave gaps in the caulk to allow any water that might get past the brick above to escape.
