I am hoping to chink it with is some kind of concrete/mortar recipe. Lovitt’s system; the two-step wood restoration kit, and the coating/finish. I don’t know if the recipe is a good recipe or maybe we made it too liquid-y and it cracked. I know that there’s a recipe that’s similar to that that uses wood ash. But the most definitive factor deciding how long your project will take may depend on the look you want. How can you make your own chinking (what’s the best chinking recipe)? Eliminating heat loss and air infiltration to maximize your cabin’s energy rating by correctly insulating the cabin. Consequently, it’s near impossible to build a log cabin with logs that notch perfectly together without any gaps. That means the chinking should adhere only to the logs above and below the chinking joint, in two thin lines. Some manufacturers offer tinting products that can give you even more creative color options. Fortunately, some chinking materials are not affected by freezing. I might create a video pointing out how well cement chinking works (and looks)… and, point out some of the downsides in using synthetic chinking products.

Our own house is built of stone downstairs, with a log upper story. Some methods included scribing and fitting the entire length of every log. For instance, the traditional scribing and notching immediately weakens the logs at the joints and creates vulnerable places for moisture and rot to set in.
Also, traditional log houses tend to “settle” over time, potentially wreaking havoc with doors and windows. These log homes have to be carefully engineered with hidden spaces above doors and windows, so that the logs can settle without destroying the openings.
On the other hand, the butt-and-pass method has no vulnerable notches for rot to start in, and all the pieces are so shiscabobbed together with rebar that there is no settling.

What is caulking and is this different from chinking? Those in this industry are likely unaware of this particular use of their product. Some people think chinking always looks like “zebra stripes” — bands of light-colored material between dark logs. When the cement dries too quickly, it seriously reduces its strength — and the same principal applies to chinking. Synthetic chinking can’t be applied over older mortar chinking. Today’s more flexible chinking (which shifts with the logs) can be applied over old cracked mortar. Next, cover the joint with bond breaker tape. Aim for a thickness of at least half the joint’s width. Chinking joint width of your logs should be between 1/4″ and 2″ and four times the anticipated movement. The depth of chinking joints less than 1″ wide should be half the width but no less than 1/4″. Before chinking, wait at least 21 days after staining to allow for cure time. Today, however, the buildings where we live and work are rarely handmade from natural materials. Although handcrafted log homes are expensive to buy, they are within reach for many as owner-managed building projects. Uses standard 3 1/4″ planer blades. Installs in less than 10 minutes. How are doors and window openings handled? Trimming out a door and window is similar to any other siding however because our siding has a raised profile you will need to make sure your door/window trim/molding extends out past the siding.
How long does it take to get the siding package? If you form a film, and we’ve all seen a few old painted cabins to make a liar out of me, that film needs to be perfect, no bulk water can get in.
Style sheets: 1: portal (default). The ticker cannot be started until the elements are visible. It is easy to apply with a self loading caulking gun. I used a plastic bondo spatula and it worked very well. This stuff handles well and cleans up well and is great to work with. My cabin has wide chinking between square logs. We must strip the protocol since they are often times different, even if the domains are the same. This is multiplied by two as you chink inside and outside. If you are planning on making your own chinking, then scroll down to chinking recipes. If the logs are too cold the pores tighten and prevent the chinking from adhering. A backer-rod, or homemade substitute, provides a “bond breaker” which provides a surface the chinking won’t adhere to. If you are using a mortar chinking, you will need to install chinking nails. This will hold the mortar in place whilst curing. If your chinking is homemade then you will probably use a grout bag or trowel. You should aim to cover 10 linear feet per hour. Once the chinking has been applied, take the foam brush and flatten the chinking’s surface. If you are using a 2-inch nozzle use a 1.5-inch brush. Correct your errors as you make them! What is acceptable “sand”….no one seems to know. I find that standard grey cement looks far too much like an urban sidewalk when applied. Not all types of log buildings were chinked. Generally though, it is a three-part system applied in several steps. Chinking, especially the daubing, is the least durable part of a log building. I have no way of knowing how old these lime chink joints are (likely decades) but they tend to be pretty well worn out and behind wood siding… crumbling, cracking, and with many sections missing or in the process of falling out.
I have a hard time understanding why cement being “too hard”… or “not breathing” would be a bad thing. I don’t think that cement is too far removed from these formulas. On the other hand, no amount of maintenance can change the inherent hardness and lack of breath-ability of portland cement so it will, eventually, crack and fail.
I know from experience that cement chinking will far outlast my lifetime. Built it 25 years ago and used permachink. Paris’ façades are lime/plaster based, many over 150 years old. It is best to wait as long as one can to let the logs thoroughly dry before chinking… but if there is no other option… it can work out well.
It barely cracks and has a cementitious hardness when set. It’s a non-toxic, cheap, breathable, stunning finish and can be coloured with paint dyes or natural oxide colours. I am looking for a formula or recipe to create white chinking. Well, of course you would!!!
