The painting of the interior masonry surfaces is a little different from painting of the exterior ones.

It is not necessary to apply a sealer when painting the exterior concrete. Since brick is porous, you’ll need to push the paint into the brick. For smaller projects like a fireplace, a paint brush will do. In addition, concrete requires the use of forms to mold the wet mixes into the desired shape until they can be removed once the mix has dried and is strong enough to stand on its own.

These additives should be removed from the surface as they can interfere with the adhesion of your coatings. We talked with three professionals to get their take on painting brick. Brick that’s chipping, deteriorating, molding or in overall poor condition is always a bad candidate for paint. Even if the idea doesn’t faze you, think of its impact on curb appeal. Problem areas affected by mould, algae or climbers should be thoroughly cleaned and treated by a fungicidal wash. Dirt and mildew are often more visible on painted brick, especially if going white or light in color, and you’ll need to power wash or scrub your house down now and again.

Not to mention, it can potentially increase resale value since brick is valued as a durable exterior surface. Set the washer to somewhere between 1500 and 2000 pounds per square inch. There are clear, solid and textured finishes to choose from for brick, cement board, concrete and stucco. Failing to remove loose and peeling paint can result in the paint flakes mixing in with your fresh coat of paint and marring the finish.

Work your way from top to bottom of house in a smooth, controlled manner, overlapping each stroke by 8 inches. Siding can be cleaned with a low-pressure spray tip. Once dry, lightly sand using medium-grit sanding block.

These qualities make them a little trickier to paint, but they certainly do not make concrete unpaintable. One more point: you might want to trim the grass and line the ground around the concrete surface with a drop cloth or something of the sort to protect the surface from picking up various particles.

As opposed to a surface treatment, the stain penetrates deep into the brick and once dry, forms a durable bond with the masonry to permanently lock in colour.

Brick experts agree that to correctly maintain your painted brick, it should be repainted every 3-5 years. Add soap to the stream for more difficult efflorescence and mildew deposits. Be sure to use 100-percent acrylic caulk and a foam backer rod for bigger cracks. For best results, brush and roll the brick as you would any other wall. There are even products that provide one-coat coverage. The product also can be tinted and used indoors or outside. Once the surface has been cleaned, go over again with a stiff brush to remove any loose material, including paint flaking. Coats must be 24 hours apart, with water dampening after each for proper curing. Note that if your brick wall has already been painted, applying sealer is not necessary. Apply the paint using a long-nap roller in long, smooth strokes. You also need a brush for cutting in along the walls when painting a floor.
