Materials used in the external walls. Bricks are probably the oldest manufactured material we have today. In stretcher bond masonry all the bricks are placed in stretcher courses.
They are suitably used only for one-half brick thick walls such as for the construction half brick thick partition wall.
MASONRY PRESENTED BY T.M.SINDHU – Types Of Brick Masonry Ppt
There are several types of bonds normally used in brick masonry.
This bond is used-in half brick thick walls.
Walls constructed with stretcher bonds are not stable enough to stand alone in case of longer span and height. To achieve this, three quarter brick bats are used in alternate courses as quoins.
This bond is best suited for walls which are at least 4 bricks thick. Raking bond pattern of laying bricks is also sometimes used for laying bricks on the floors.
This bond is used when the bricks for the face work are costlier than the other bricks and as such the number of face bricks is economized by using more stretchers.
For example, the thickness of face bricks is 5 cm and that of back bricks in 3 cm. Do the post message bit after the dom has loaded.
There are directly used in the construction work. These stones have rounded natural faces or angular broken pieces. Masonry is further classified into three types. The beds sides and faces of the stones used in this masonry are all dressed finely with chisel. It is the highest grade of masonry and costly. Different types of appearances can be obtained. Stone a natural, hard substance formed from minerals and earth material which are present in rocks. By controlling the ingredients used, cement can be light gray white or range of darker gray. The raw materials is dug from pits, crushed to have small fine consistency then tempered with water to produce plastic clay. Texture or thin mixture of colored clay can be applied to the surface. Flashing: fire is regulated to create reducing atmosphere in the kiln that develop color variation. Plants are close to source materials. Fired clay is ground up and recycled into the production process or used as landscape material. Mortar is made of abundant material. Clay brick can include recycled brick dust and post industrial waste such as fly ash. Name what the two aggregates are in the cement mixture. Limestone turned into lime mortar replaced mud as mortar. Greeks perfected their temples of limestone and marble.
Failures in Brick Masonry
Rowlock – laid on face, end visible. A corbel is an ancient structural device of limited spanning capability, that may be used for small openings in brick walls, for beam brackets, and for ornamental provisions.
Modular bricks – normal size – 20 × 10 × 10 cm. Cannot be adopted in walls having thickness less than one and half brick. Flemish bond is slightly economical as a number of bats can be used. Stretching (running) bond:”, “description”: “- all bricks are laid as stretchers. Raking bond: – bricks are laid at any angle other than 0 or 90 degrees – arrangement helps to increase longitudinal stability of thick walls.
Zig-zag bonds: – similar to herringbone bond. What is the difference between a pier and column?
Frogged bricks shall have depressions in one or more bed faces but their total volume shall not exceed 20% of gross volume of a brick.
Brick blocks don’t need any dressing.
There is no problem to its availability.
Bricks are rough and shape is slightly irregular.
The thickness of mortar joint is 12 mm.
Used in places where rainfall is not heavy.
Used in walls of half – brick in thickness.
This bond doesn’t develop proper internal bond.
Colour of the bricks should be uniform and bright.
The quality of this bricks are inferior.
Used for temporary & unimportant structure.
